written description:
- There are four people in the diner; two are a couple, one is a man with his back to the viewer, and a man behind the counter serving the rest of them.
- The couple are over dressed. The woman is wearing a fancy seeming red dress, while the man is wearing a very well tailored suit. Both have a depressing face, they seem out of place not just because of their cloths, but also because they seem to be elsewhere, not in the moment or the diner.
- The man who is not facing the viewer seems to be exactly like the man in the couple, except his cloths seem more worn.
- The man behind the counter seems like he is looking at the couple, but based on their expression, it is more likely that he is staring out of the wind behind them into the empty street.
- The diner itself is extremely bright. The light from inside the diner shines throughout the entire scene and makes the inside of the diner fluorescent. And because of this light, there are also a lot of shadows.
- There are no visible doors in the diner except for the door to the bathroom, which makes everyone inside seems trapped.
- And the the man serving the others is even more trapped, there are no doors or spaces in the counter for him to leave. Perhaps that is why he is looking outside with an expression of longing.
- I will continue this later.
7. Unit Evaluation
-What was the most challenging aspect of this unit? Explain.
-What worked well for you in the research project? What helped you learn?
-What didn't work well for you in this research project? What would have made the project better?
-Critique the overall human form in art research project. Should this project be taught in ninth grade Humanities English? Why or why not?
-The decision of what painting to choose. I always knew I was going to do an Edward Hopper painting, but there were so many to choose from. I finally fell upon Nighthawks because of its prestigious reputation.
-Other people's opinions of the painting. When I got another perspective on the painting, i was able to look at it in more depth
-I don't think that anything didn't work, all the information that I found was important.
-I liked some aspects of this project, the art, the analysis, the power point. But I did not like the blog experience. I thought it was a huge waste of time, it took me two days to even obtain a blog, and it didn't help me organize my thoughts any more than notes would have. But thats just me.

I have begun to put a power point together for the presentation on my painting. I am having trouble thinking about what kinds of slides i will put on it, and what i will put on those slides. Beyond background and analysis i don't know what to do. I will probably end up spending the rest of the hour thinking of the other three slides to have.

notes on "Nighthawks":
-painted in 1942 by Edward Hopper
-inspired by a diner in greenwich village
-the diner is called "Phillies"
-It is edwards take on the term "night owls", all of the people in the diner aren't talking to each other, they might see each other every night, but hardly ever talk.
-Edward began painting immediatly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the entire country was "gloomy" after the attack, and perhaps these people in the diner are contemplating things like mortality and what an enemy is.
-The scene is probably set in spring or summer, it is warm, based on the clothing, and that makes it even later in the night. Because it is dark, and in the spring/ summer it gets dark after a long time.
-This portrayal of modern urban life as empty or lonely is a common theme throughout Hopper's work. Most every woman he paints is alone and depressed looking.
-There is only one door, and it seems to be a door to a bathroom, making it seem as if all of the people in the diner are trapped there.
-Edward Hopper frequently uses light and shadows to create the mood of a scene.

Today, I researched my painting on Wikipidia. I found out when and where it was made; Greenwich village, immediatly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. And I think that these two aspects are very important to the story of the painting. As i mentioned earlier, I find this to be a very depressing painting, and this time period fit that mood very well.

The art piece I chose was "Nighthawks" by Edward Hopper (thus the title of the blog). Nighthawks is a slightly depressing painting, much like the rest of Hopper's paintings. The picture is "about" a married couple, probably past their silver anniversery, and losing patience. When I look at a painting I usually try to find some sort of a background story, I ask questions to myself like: "What isn't shown here?" Or "Whats hiden?", "What is the artist trying to say about the main charactures" (if there are charactures). And these are the questions I am asking of Nighthwaks.
